Helping the Maasai to Restock Their Herds

Over the last 3 years, one of the worst droughts in Kenya and Africa has taken its toll. The Maasai with their herds were particularly hard hit. Although they walked their cattle in search of new pastures, the widespread nature of the drought, meant that searching for pastures was extremely difficult. Many of the herders lost 90% of their herd. With the drought now breaking, we are helping the Maasai fund restocking as quickly as they can so that their breeding program can kick in. A donation of as little as $50 can help buy goats, sheep and cattle. On behalf of the Maasai we would be extremely grateful for your support to help this group recover from the droughts devastating impact.

And by harnessing a cultural legacy around the skills of bread making, people can deliver economic certainty for themselves and their families, reduce stress and anxiety and have a more stable life. It’s a great practical program with immediate benefits and low start up costs. And the return of smiles to the women’s faces and those of their families is a reward for everyone.

Planting Trees to Stop Erosion

Our reforestation of Maasai land involves planting over 10,000 trees in areas most affected by erosion. The loss of land and damage to ecosystems by overgrazing is nothing new. Because landscapes, even within a small area are highly varied, the solutions are inevitably local and relevant to that area. And that’s why this tree planting activity that involves supporters of One Horizon is so important. Choosing to support One Horizon is a great way of supporting the reestablishment of habitats for wildlife and mitigating the loss of land due to erosion in the Maasai homelands. Of course this is one part of a multifaceted program. The other added benefits is that it provides long term involvement to Maasai and other youths in an area where there are limited employment opportunities.

A Cash Donation

Some people prefer to make a cash donation to One Horizon Africa and such donations help us implement the sustainable programs and activities that help improve people’s lives.Most notably, cash donations are often used to access medical services and particularly for us to purchase simple medications that stop children from suffering from the usual childhood colds, the flu and other debilitating illnesses. For every donation made, our guests receive a receipt. We appreciate the trust placed in us by our supporters. Cash donations can be made in small amounts of $25, $50 and $100 dollars. A Nutrition Program - a gift that changes the lives of hungry Kenyan children

This gift will provide a Kenyan child with a healthy, nutritious breakfast and lunch for a month. It supports One Horizon's Nutrition Program. In Kenya, 25% of all children under 5 years of age are malnourished and chronically underweight. In the areas that One Horizon operates most children often do not receive a regular single meal per day. One Horizon is often the only source of food for children and their guardians. That is why our nutrition programs are the basis of our work. Each day we provide breakfast and lunch for more than 2000 children. We also provide meals for their grandparents, who often take on the responsibility of raising the children. Our nutrition program enables our children to attend school and be able to concentrate with a 'full tummy'. We buy nutritious, fresh and wholesome foods from local farmers and suppliers so your gift is supporting them as well.

A PERMANENT HOME FOR OUR WOMEN’S CENTRE

Being able to offer places to women in our vocational re-education program has been one of the most rewarding programs of One Horizon. The ultimate objective has been to economically empower women enabling them to support their families. Ultimately this means that family units do not fracture, that children are well fed and can go to school. And losing children to the street is all but eliminated.

If we can raise $25,000 USD, we will be able to build a permanent vocational re-education centre. And the funds saved on rent will enable us to include up to 50 women in the year long program. The government has granted us a quarter acre of land, rent free from land taxes for as long as we do our work. This is because of the benefit that has flowed from our program.
If there is a program that you would like to support in Africa, then we hope that you would consider One Horizon and a donation of $250 dollars. The funds will be held by Standard Chartered Bank. We need 100 donors to make this a possibility and we hope to be able to achieve our goal within 6 months. If we cannot achieve our funding goal, we will refund all the money to donors. A Sewing Machine - a gift that will help single Kenyan mothers keep their families together

This gift supports One Horizon's Vocational and Lifestyle Training program for Kenyan women. At our Women's Empowerment Centre in Nairobi we help single mothers start their own small businesses so they can keep their families together. Many of them train to become seamstresses. When they graduate this training, which incorporates learning business kills, equips them for a range of businesses such as dressmaking and mosquito net making. We also support our graduates through our Education program, by engaging them to make our school uniforms. Your gift of a sewing machine is a vital step in this process. We purchase good reliable second hand machines and spare parts from local suppliers so you are supporting them as well.

This gift supports One Horizon's Electricity Program for Kenyan families. Kenya Power provides highly discounted electricity rates to struggling communities. However, it is the cost of the electricity meter and its installation which is often too much for a disadvantaged family. That’s what your gift is – the purchase and installation of an electricity metre for one Kenyan family. The results are life-changing. Electricity means safer cooking practices and healthier families. It also means children are not dependant on candle light to do their homework.

Energy For A Community - a gift of biogas that changes life in a Kenyan community

Your gift of biogas is a win-win. This is because it changes the life a Kenyan community. What's more, it's environment friendly. Your gift of biogas for one Kenyan community will turn manure into cooking gas. They way we do this is to generate biogas from pig and cattle manure. The reason this is life-changing for the community is because it improves health. This is because manure can contaminate water and soil. Therefore when we use manure to create biogas, the risk of spreading disease reduces. Further, it helps save the community's forests. This is because biogas reduces the need to use timber for cooking and heating. This also means people are not inhaling smoke. Therefore this reduces the chance of respiratory problems. When biogas is produced it creates a byproduct. This byproduct is not toxic. It is a fertiliser that helps nourish fields of vegetables. Your gift supports our program called One Horizon Energy. This gift supports One Horizon's Fresh Water for A Family program. Your gift will supply one Kenyan family with a water tank and gravity collection system. Kenyans are masters of inventiveness and initiative. A simple water tank, that collects runoff from even the most modest dwellings, ensures great benefits for a family. From cleaning clothes, personal hygiene and in cooking, the availability of fresh water is a bonus for a family. Alternative water supplies can be polluted and fresh water is very expensive. A water tank and gravity system saves a family money, ensures a healthier future and is environmentally safe and clean.

Grandmas Field Kitchens - a gift that ensures impoverished Kenyan grandmas receive a nutritious meal a day

This gift supports One Horizon's Grandmas' Field Kitchens Program. Your gift will provide nutritious luncheons for five grandmas for one month. Many grandmas in Kenya have the responsibility for raising their grandchildren. Many grandmas work in vegetable fields for just $1 a day to help feed their charges. In providing food for their grandchildren, many grandmas go hungry themselves. That’s where our Grandma Field Kitchen program provides a bridge of support and community support. Our field kitchen provides nutritious food for these inspiring grandmas.

Shambas are Kenyan vegetable gardens. They are important to the villages that we visit. This is because shambas provide healthy food for an entire village. However they need water to thrive and survive. Your gift is a drip feed irrigation system. One Horizon will install it for a Kenyan village. Drip feed irrigation of small plots of land is effective farming practice. It ensures that food supply is guaranteed whilst eliminating wasteful use of limited water. Your gift will change the lives of the Kenyans in this community.

New Clothes - a gift that changes that lives of Kenyan children who are often homeless

This gift supports One Horizon's Clothing Program for Children. Your gift, for 5-10 years olds, includes shirts & blouses, shorts, skirts, trousers, underwear, jumpers and shoes. For $50 we are able to buy a clothes package which will cover the needs of a growing child for a year. The children in our communities often live in homes where both parents are unemployed. Therefore new clothes are not an option. In Africa and in Kenya in particular there are no social service safety nets like unemployment benefits, aged or disability pensions. Hence in Kenya where there is 50% unemployment there are rarely funds for parents to buy the clothing required by growing children. That is why many Kenyan children only have only one set of clothes, which they wear each day. One Horizon buys second hand clothes from local markets. This is a very cost effective way of ensuring that children have a variety of clothes and, importantly, items to keep them warm in winter.

One Horizon's farming programs truly do change lives. This is because we help struggling Kenyan grandmas start their own chicken or pig farms. The United Nations rates pig and chicken farming highly. It recognises them among the most successful small-scale enterprises for third world communities. Your gift is three sows and high-quality feeds for a grandma. Kenyan grandmas often care for their extended families. This also includes raising their orphaned grandchildren. It's tough for the grandmas. This is because they were born into a generational cycle of poverty and disadvantage. However, your gift will break that cycle. Your gift is three sows and high quality feed. It is the first step in the grandmas starting their own small farming business. In eight months the pigs will be breeding. Along the way, we support the grandmas with mentoring.
