Fayoum was a center for the cult of Sobek and through history an important hub for farming and trade. It is located 100 km southeast of Cairo, with its oasis transformed from a desert basin to a lush area by the Bahr Yussef canal which connects it to the Nile.  The canal was initially constructed in 2300BC.  It diverted flooding water from the Nile to the basin, an extraordinary project of ancient engineering brilliance and typical of the scope of plans that the ancient Egyptian were renowned for.

The Fayoum Oasis has sustained populations from ancient Egypt through Roman times and beyond.  Today, it’s a site as crucial as an agricultural hub as it was in ancient times.  And it has a collection of unique archaeological and culture features which identifies it as one of the gems of Egypt.  Fayoum Oasis comprises approximately 157 villages and 1565 very small villages(hamlets) with a population of more than 3,848,708 inhabitants. The capital of the governorate is El Fayoum and it is one of the most beautiful and fertile areas of Egypt.
