Sadly, we said farewell to Eddie the Boar this week, the notorious and aging Lothario at one of our communities where we’re helping Kenyan grandmas start pig farms. In fact, Eddie set the gold standard among our boars when it came to mating with anything at any time. He once fell in love with a fence post! Eddy’s moved onto a neighbouring green field of retirement but you can still visit him – and his replacement Barry – on our Go Granny Go one-day tour as well as some of our longer Connect With Kenya safaris. How does a young Masai man straddle two worlds successfully? Risa is the son of a Masai Elder at the traditional Masai village that we visit on some of our people safaris. He lives in the world of ancient traditions that the Masai hold dear, but also he’s increasingly exposed to the developing world that Kenya embraces. Like many young Masai men with this ‘dual citizenship’, Risa is already navigating the inevitable challenges in amazing ways and exemplifies credentials that make him a great ambassador for both his tribe and his nation.

One Horizon is such a great organisation that helps poor communities establish sustainable futures in Kenya. Our guide, Carol took us to a village of the Kikuyu tribe on the outskirts of Nairobi to get a first hand look at their way if life. We sat with them, cooked and ate with them. They told us stories (translated from Swahili by our guide), they braided my hair, they hugged us and wouldn’t let go. It was a heart warming day.

Building new classrooms changes the lives of disadvantaged Kenyan children who come into One Horizon’s orbit. In many of our communities, parents either struggle to send their children to school or, in their despair, just give up. An education can be way down on the priority list, not because parents don’t value it, but simply because obtaining enough food takes every bit of money, effort and energy they have.

There’s a particular Acacia tree which is the centre of a strange phenomenon at our Masai village in Kajiado County – at every opportunity our guests scale the tree!
