Overview

Overview

This tour explores the efforts of a family and a society to reach eternal life. It’s a fascinating story that will take you to the Giza Plateau pyramids, the Steppe Pyramids of Saqqara, but also inside the pyramids themselves and to recently unearthed tombs.

As impressive as the physical structure of the pyramids at Giza and Saqqara are, there is a bigger story about what motivated the pharaohs to build them. The designs of the pyramids certainly changed after mistakes were made that required a re-think. But the answer to ‘why’, that is, why such massive projects were undertaken, is much more than simply creating an edifice to celebrate their life.

The motivation was that a smooth sided pyramid, if it could be built and faced in a particular direction, could capture, reflect, and intensify sunlight back into space.  When capped with white limestone, the intensity of the rays of light from the rising sun, would help the pharaoh transcend to the Gods. Hence pyramid building changed from a north-south to an east-west orientation. Capturing the light as the sun rose would facilitate a pharaoh’s spirit upwards and beyond to their immortal life.

The pyramids also came to be built in alignment with the three stars of the Orion Constellation (ie Alnitak, Alnilam, and Mintaka). Subsequently, there were 3 pyramids on the Giza Plateau whose positioning and dimensions reflected the stars of the Orion Constellation.

The Orion Constellation was associated by ancient Egyptians with Osiris, the god of rebirth and it was this alignment between their pyramids and the Gods that the pharaohs sought to engineer. The science and knowledge they applied were impressive, but their passion and belief in a life beyond was ultimately what engaged them every day of their lives.

What did the pharaohs leave us? A legacy that has lasted 4,500 years and which today draws people on their own personal pilgrimage. Faith can move mountains, and regarding the pharaohs and their pyramids, it certainly did!

Itinerary

What To Expect At The Giza Pyramids

  • Your guide will cover the history of the pyramids in briefings during the morning.
  • Caution: If you enter the burial chamber of the pyramid, it will be hot and a slow walk. Consider that if you are claustrophobic.
  • You can walk around the pyramids if you like, but always have a hat, umbrella, or water if it’s hot.
  • There are many hawkers around, and if you are with your guide, you will be left alone and not asked to buy curios.
  • If you walk around by yourself, always be courteous and firm should you decline a hawker’s advances.
  • Your vehicle will be parked outside the perimeter of the pyramids but will enter to take you to the viewing area.
  • The viewing area is on a ridge that overlooks the pyramids and is brilliant for taking photos and videos. You are not restricted.
  • Within the pyramid compound, there are Tourist Police who can be called upon at any time should you need them.

All About Faith

Most people are impressed by the size of the Giza Pyramids. But the reason for their existence was the pharaoh’s faith and belief in eternal life. Pyramids were a way to transition to this new life. The reflection of light from the pyramid would, they believed, help them transcend to the heavens (based on the angle and direction of the pyramid). And their alignment with the Orion Constellation would link them to the God Osiris. This tour will give you great insight into the pharaoh’s motivations.

Pyramids As The Stairways to Eternity

There are 118 Egyptian Pyramids, the largest at Giza. The pharaoh Khufu who built this pyramid,  was preceded by his father, the Pharoah Sneferu, who built 3 pyramids in his lifetime. It’s been suggested that Khufu as a young boy would have played in the shadows of the pyramids his father built. And the lessons he learned there were manifested in the impressive Gisa Pyramids that he built. We will share these stories on your tour to enhance this incredible experience.

As The Sphinx Watches the Centuries Unfold

Sphinxes were often placed at the entrance of temples to guard their mysteries. Even the name was given 2000 years after the date of its construction (during Khafre’s rule) But Sellen Hassan, an Egyptologist wrote, “Taking all things into consideration, it seems that we must give the credit of erecting this, the world’s most wonderful statue, to Khafre, but always with this reservation that there is not one single contemporary inscription which connects the Sphinx with Khafre”. The mystery continues

And Now A Treat…..Kind Of!

If you are an adventurous type and want to get that iconic photo to show your grandkids that you were indeed in Egypt, this may be an opportunity that you will find hard to pass up. You can ride on a camel for a walk around the pyramids photographing them for posterity. We must warn you though, it’s a little bumpier than an air conditioned vehicle. Your choice entirely and it’s part of the experience.

Leaving The Pyramids for Lunch

We enjoy taking our guests out for lunch because it’s another way to experience Egyptian culture. We just want to make the following points.: We only take our guests to the best restaurants. We place good hygiene and cleanliness as our number 1 priority. The restaurants offer both vegetarian and non-vegetarian options. If you choose to pass on lunch, we won’t take it personally. But please be assured, your health and safety are our overriding priority.

What To Expect At Saqqara

  • Your guide will cover the history of the Stepped Pyramid
  • You will be able to go into the burial chamber which is below the pyramid’s base – it’s not an upward walk! Chambers in earlier pyramids like Saqqara were below ground whilst later pyramids like those at Giza were in the centre of the structure.
  • You can take a walk around the enclosure of the pyramid but always bring a hat, umbrella, and water if it’s hot.  There are very few hawkers at Saqqara.  You will also be able to go inside one of the recently discovered tombs. Don’t miss this as it is amazing.
  • You are free to take videos and images inside (just follow the signage and the lead of your guide) as circumstances can change.

Saqqara – The Site of the First Stone Built Pyramid

Saqqara is where the first ever stone pyramid was built. It dates to the 27th Century BC (4,693 years old). The pyramid is known as the Pyramid of Djoser (after the pharaoh of that name) or The Stepped Pyramid. Today, Saqqara is the most important archaeological site in all of Egypt. It was designed by Imhotep, the architect of Djoser. The Step Pyramid stands at a height of 204 feet (62 meters) with six stepped layers. You will also have the opportunity to explore inside the pyramid.

Additionally, We Will Enter Recently Discovered Tombs

Saqqara has continued to showcase new archaeological findings. Modern technology has enabled new finds to be discovered,. hence we can enter recently discovered tombs in what is an overwhelming experience. The brilliance of the hieroglyphics and wall inscriptions is astounding. You can spend time discovering these and your guide will provide briefings. An amazing experience when you think of how well the tombs have survived the centuries.

False Doors and Brilliant Interiors

The tombs will leave you enthralled with the history they tell, of the daily life of the ancient Egyptians, stirring the imagination of what it meant to live in that era. Our tours are living history experiences that recreate what it meant to be Egyptian. Amazing indeed when you think of the skills and application of technology that they developed. Ancient Egypt was a very advanced society in almost every discipline.

And So, We Return to Cairo

We return to Cairo in the late afternoon after what has been an exhilarating and revealing day. Your images will capture memories of a lifetime and we believe they will spark a new area of interest for you. We do hope to see you again soon, inshallah.…..if God wills!

Mark Lehner

Dr Mark Lehner ranks amongst the most outstanding Egyptologists of the modern era. Mark has earned his international reputation based on over 40 years of conducting research and excavations in Egypt. Mark and a colleague launched the Giza Plateau Mapping Project in 1984 to create a high precision surveyed map of both the natural and cultural features of the entire Giza Plateau.

In 1988, Mark leading a team of colleagues, discovered a site 400 meters south of the Sphinx that proved to be a vast settlement that once served as the base of operations for constructing the great pyramid complexes.  In addition to traditional survey techniques, they now used ground penetrating radar, laser scanning, and drones to document the major monuments on the Giza plateau and other sites around Egypt.  Before Mark  began work on the Plateau in 1979, there were no scale drawings of the Sphinx. The project that Mark and his colleague James Allen embarked on, produced an invaluable archive of Sphinx material that is used as reference points to this day.

In 2018, Mark Lehner and Zahi Hawass returned to the Sphinx to document changes to the Sphinx and its environment since the original project. Mark had established an organisation called AERA (Ancient Egyptian Research Associates) and it was this diverse group of professionals with special skills and using advanced technologies (3D recordings by drone, photogrammetry, and laser scanning) that have continued to investigate and record the site.   Mark is the leading authority on the Giza Plateau and Pyramids.
