Overview

Overview

Here is a unique way to experience up close the diversity that lies at the heart of Egyptian society. Join us for an ancient Christmas celebration – not on December 25th , but on January 7th! That’s Christmas Day according to the Julian calendar, and for the Coptic Christian community that follows it.

On this special holiday, we’ll go deep into the old city, Cairo’s Coptic Quarter, to see how one of the world’s most enduring Christian sects celebrates this joyous occasion, followed by festivities and food in the city’s newest and most spectacular commons, Al Azhar Park.

This tour will bring you not only the joys of a second Christmas, but also new insights into the Egyptian culture of tolerance of its many ethnic and religious peoples.

What Is Coptic Christmas?

The Coptic Christians you will meet represent one of Christianity’s most ancient groups, going back to the first century. Besides following a different calendar, the community observes a 43-day fast by not consuming animal products. The fast ends on the eve of January 6th, with Coptic Christians breaking their fast in a day of celebration, family gatherings, and fun.

Here’s How You Will Participate

We’ll begin our tour in the narrow lanes of Old Cairo’s Coptic Quarter, whose churches and ancient architecture echo the lives of millennia. With church bells ringing, you’ll join the many families dressed in their finest, exchanging wishes of “Eid Milad Majid” (Glorious Birth Feast).

We’ll visit the spectacular Hanging Church (Al-Mu’allaqa), a revered and beautiful Coptic church, now dressed in vibrant Christmas decorations, viewing families as they offer prayers and receive blessings.

We can also visit St. Sergius Church (Abu Serga), said to have been built at the site where the Holy Family took shelter during their flight to Egypt. This profoundly symbolic holy site is a 2,000-year connection between Christian biblical theology and the tolerant sheltering traditions of the Egyptian people.

Celebrating in Al Azhar Park

Our celebration continues as we step into the magnificent greenery and expansive city views of world-class Al Azhar Park, built by Aga Khan. Today, it is the gathering spot for many Coptic Christian families to picnic, as well as Egyptians of other faiths, also observing this special day.

Against the backdrop of the park’s rich landscaped gardens, Islamic architecture, and generous views of the city, families unpack their Christmas feasts. On their picnic blankets, you’ll see an assortment of traditional Coptic Christmas dishes such as fatta (rice, crispy bread, and meat), lamb, and kahk (shortbread cookies filled with nuts and dates).

But you won’t just view the celebrants from afar. Your One Horizon guide will make introductions with the families and individuals, so you can meet and learn what Christmas means to them. And share your Christmas stories from back home.

Your Own Christmas Feast

Besides its beautiful gardens, the park offers a choice of elegant and scenic restaurants where you will enjoy a special feast prepared for you. Roast chicken or lamb will await, along with the day’s other special dishes, as you take in views of historic Cairo.

After enjoying samboosa (a pastry filled with meat or cheese), roz bel laban (a creamy rice pudding), and more, we’ll stroll Al Azhar’s manicured green spaces and terraces, admiring the mix of Islamic structures that serve as a harmonious backdrop to this traditional Christian holiday.

Soon, the auburn hues of sunset will color the park and the city beyond, bringing this day of peace, harmony, and love to a perfect finish.

Join us for this very unique Christmas Day, in a setting unlike you’ll find anywhere else. Come celebrate ancient Coptic Christmas in today’s Cairo.

Coptic Christianity

Coptic Christianity refers to the traditions and beliefs of Egypt’s native Christian population, particularly members of the Coptic Orthodox Church, founded by Saint Mark the Apostle in the first century. The term “Coptic” means “Egyptian” and highlights the church’s ancient roots in the region. Coptic Christians are Oriental Orthodox, distinct from the Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox churches.

Coptic Christianity began in Alexandria, with Christianity becoming the dominant religion of Egypt by the fourth century
