A Day Of Fun, Food, Stories, And Laughter

Move beyond the usual tourist destinations to experience the real Egypt – spending meaningful one-on-one time with a Nile Delta family at their home. Far from the museums and monuments, you’ll be part of a true moment of human connection, one of shared work, stories, laughter, and the universal magic of a meal around the family table.

Our “Meet An Egyptian Family” experience is so unique, you won’t be a tourist but, rather, an honoured guest. Your “family” will be as curious about your lifestyle as you are about theirs.

During the course of this special visit, you’ll discover the workings of the local market, perhaps sharing cooking chores in the kitchen, and even visiting a local mosque to experience an important part of your hosts life and activities. At every step of the adventure, your One Horizon guide will translate, explaining aspects of cultural significance and facilitating connection with your family.

It All Begins With A Story

As the guest of honour, you will settle in the home or perhaps the family courtyard with a cup of tea as you hear the family’s “origin” story – perhaps how their parents met and married, as well as your hosts’ journey to this place in time – their life, their home or farm, and their children. And you can share your “story”, the events of your life, and how you came to be here on this special day.

These are the moments that draw us together, regardless of who we are or our background. The discovery of shared values and feelings with your hosts will quickly join you into the familiar human ties of friendship.

To The Market

As a special extra, you and your Guide will join a family member on a visit to the local market – the hub of village life. Part necessity, part theatre, part social enterprise, the market is the glue that holds the village together. Here, you’ll be treated to a dazzling array of colourful spices, vegetables, and assorted goods.

Here too, you will also enjoy the fun of the good-natured bargaining that accompanies the world of bazars and small shops. You’ll learn how to pick the freshest spices and be entertained as your host negotiates with the shopkeepers for the best prices.  This is grass roots Egypt that few rarely see.  And throughout the hum of these activities, the flow of conversation will create a bond with your hosts and bring about a sense of achievement.

A Hearty Lunch and Great Conversation

The preparation involved in making lunch is the most important ritual of the day, a family meal. You will gather around the table or sit cross-legged on mats and partake from  platters heaped with a flavoursome array of foods and dips.

The conversation will flow easily, reflecting the events of the day, your personal stories, helping out around the home, your visit to the market and maybe even future plans.  Your hosts will take pride in having shown you an exceptional day, and you’ll have the satisfaction of knowing that you are helping them to sustain their family.

This is the very best of hands-on tourism, where everyone makes new friends, has fun, learns about each other’s lives, and takes away lasting memories.

Join us and our Nile Delta families for a very special outing that few others will ever enjoy.

Itinerary

Travelling to the Nile Delta

Your One Horizon host will meet you at your hotel for the 90 minute road journey to the Nile Delta and the village you will be visiting.

It’s a great way to see Egypt as we travel through towns and villages en-route to your destination.

Visiting a Local Market

Within reach of the village we are travelling to, we stop at the local vegetable and fruit market to collect the ingredients for lunch.

It is here that you will first meet your host family where you will walk with them through the market.  They will explain their selection of vegetables and fruit and no doubt engage in spirited bargaining with the stores holders.  It’s an eye opening experience in a local market where banter and laughter abound.

The next stop is the home of your hosts.

It’s always a very warm welcome from the family.  And the first event is welcoming with Egyptian tea.

Taking Tea – A Uniquely Egyptian Ritual

Sweet and energising tea is served as a ‘refresher’ and is an essential aspect of Egyptian hospitality.  It’s your time to sit down and as you sip your tea, reflect on the experience you have had already.

Egyptian tea is a cornerstone of daily life, characterized by tea sweetened with sugar, or vibrant hibiscus tea (karkade), both typically served in small glasses with mint. It is a symbol of hospitality and relaxation, frequently enjoyed hot or cold. It’s part of your welcome into your hosts home

Getting to Know Your Hosts

After enjoying your tea, your host will give you a brief history of their family.  It’s a great way to learn about life in Egypt.  Your hosts are delightful and you will meet the father, his wife and his daughters.

Preparing Lunch

Lunch in Egypt is considered the main meal of the day, typically eaten from 2pm – 4 pm.  It’s the focus of family and friends gathering.  And today, you are the guests.

Egyptian fresh food is mostly provided from the Nile Valley’s farms (of which you are in the centre).  It focuses on legumes, grains, and vegetables which are cooked with mild spices like cumin, coriander, and garlic.  You will be delighted with the tasty, fresh and abundant food on the table.

A Short Walk Around the Town

Whilst your lunch is cooking, your host will take you on a short walk around the village. It’s a great way to get a feel for the life of the locals.

A Mosque Tour

You can also partake of a visit to the towns local mosque. Your host will explain its role in the life of the community and as a place of worship.

After your short walk and tour, you will return to your hosts home for lunch.

An Egyptian Lunch

Lunch can be taken in a traditional Egyptian way (by sitting cross legged on cushions on the floor) or alternatively at a table.

Lunch is a great way to relax and the conversation that goes with it is a great insight into Egyptian culture.  Fresh, abundant and tasty food is something you will remember for life.

Dressing Up

Some Fun After Lunch

Our guests have an opportunity to be dressed in the cloths that are commonly worn by Muslim women and men.  For women we have Abayas.  These are loose, flowing robes worn over clothes and similarly for men it’s an ankle-length, (usually white or beige), long-sleeved robe.  It has various names and in the middle east it is often called ‘Dishdasha’.  Women also wear a hijab (head scarf). These garments are often worn in public to cover hair, neck, and body, adhering to Islamic modesty principles.

It’s an opportunity for some memorable photographs to record your time with your hosts.

Your Overnight Accommodation

After the afternoon activities, we depart in the late afternoon, for your hotel and overnight accommodation.

It’s your chance for some down time – to relax and take in all the memories and events of the day. This is your time before the final event of the day.

Dinner

The concluding event of the day is dinner at a local restaurant.  You will be joined by your hosts family. We ensure the highest quality local restaurants dictated by our focus on your wellbeing.

It’s a great way  to enjoy your new friends and hosts and conclude the day.

After dinner we return you to your hotel

Visiting A Nile Farmer

Breakfast At Your Hotel

Following breakfast at your hotel we pick you for an amazing excursion to a Nile River farmer’s home and farm,

A Short 10 Minute Ride in a Tuk Tuk

Because the Nile Delta region is criss-crossed by extensive irrigation systems, the access roadway to the farm is very narrow – hence the need to travel by Tuk Tuk.

Your Nile Farmer Host

The Nile farmer you will be visiting has spent his entire life on the land as a farmer – and that is close to 80 years.

A Mud Brick Home

You will visit the home that the farmer built himself and where he and his wife raised their children.

Intricate Irrigation Systems

The intricate irrigation system surrounds his home and his farm is literally outside his door step.  Water from the Nile flows to his land.  He also has cows, ducks and chickens.

This activity delves into the history of the Nile which has enabled farming for over 5000 years. And you will see the thousands of farms and the communities that have supplied Egypt with food for thousands of years  t

Tea and Comradery

Of course, the farmer will welcome you with tea and it’s an opportunity to talk to him about his family’s life in Egypt

Picking Crops From the Field

Following our departure from the farmers home, we make a short stop at a farm to pick some beans as a parting gift to our hosts.
