Overview

Overview

First, you’ll notice the bright colours, soon joined by the sounds of music, and families picnicking on the banks of the mighty Nile. Walk a little closer and you’ll see children playing, couples strolling, and out beyond them on the river, boat races.

Some of the boats are decked out in Pharaonic style, their crew costumed in the dress of 3,000 years ago, their bright blues and gold reflecting off these ancient waters.

And all around you, the entire community hums with performances of dance, concerts, art, and poetry competitions in this time-honoured tribute to the life-giving waters of the mighty Nile, the lifeblood of Egypt. This is Wafaa El-Nil, also known as “Fidelity of the Nile”.

Join This Historical Celebration

One Horizon is thrilled to bring you this ancient and modern experience – the country-wide celebration of the Nile River’s life-giving waters. This special holiday commemorates the significant cultural impact of the great river on Egyptian society.

However, throughout history, the Nile has meant even more – the lifeblood of Egyptian survival. Its yearly flooding and the rich, black delta sediment it left upon the land could mean the difference between a rich harvest and famine.

Little wonder the ancient’s paid homage to Hapi, the god of the Nile’s floodwaters, who they believed brought abundance and prosperity. Later, in the Christian Coptic era, the holiday became known as Wafaa El-Nil, with the continued themes of fertility and gratitude.

When To Celebrate

Historically, the Nile’s waters rose in July when its headwaters in Ethiopia increased and flowed toward Egypt – the start of the flooding season. With the adoption of the Coptic calendar, August 15th is now the official day of celebration. However, with the completion of the Aswan Dam in 1970, the ancient waters’ flooding has been tamed from its seasonal cycles.

But the deeply felt roots of this revered holiday still find expression throughout Egyptian society, seen everywhere in the colourful displays of pageantry and performance. We invite you to join in as we share the day’s fun and entertainment.

How To Celebrate

We’ll gather on the river’s banks to picnic with traditional Egyptian fare like lentil stew, flatbread, and dates, while colourful boats parade before us.

Not far off, there’s music, dance, and celebrants in bright costumes who sing and toss flowers into the ageless waters in gratitude for its ever-flowing gifts.

If you wish, we will arrange for a ride on a felucca, a traditional sailboat, and sail to the center of all the color and festivities, where you’ll enjoy the power and beauty of the river.

Wafaa El-Nil – more than a day of ancient rituals, but a moment to enjoy all that Egypt has grown to be.

Let One Horizon craft a perfect day of celebration and gratitude for you on this most authentic and historical holiday.
