From $265 (Both Private Group Tours & Small Group Tours)
Overview
Each autumn, the Tunis Village Pottery and Handicrafts Festival in Fayoum offers travellers a rare invitation to experience Egypt through the hands, stories and traditions of its people. Set within one of the country’s most creative rural communities, this distinctive celebration is far more than an event on the calendar. It is a chance to slow down, meet local artisans, shape clay beneath expert guidance and discover a way of life where craftsmanship, culture and hospitality remain beautifully intertwined. For those who travel with purpose, Tunis Village is not simply somewhere to visit—it is somewhere to connect.
Combining the Festival with Local Attractions
One Horizon has thoughtfully paired time at the festival with some of Fayoum Oasis’s most rewarding experiences, creating a journey that blends artistic immersion with the wider cultural and natural beauty of the region. Guests can move from pottery studios and artisan workshops to lakeside landscapes, desert vistas and historic sites, all while enjoying the ease of a carefully curated itinerary. Yet the true richness of this journey lies in its human dimension: the conversations shared with makers, the pleasure of learning by doing and the sense of welcome that turns a visit into something far more personal and memorable.
Pottery, Handicrafts, Art and Cultural Encounters
- Explore the village’s pottery studios and galleries, where each hand-finished ceramic piece reflects both the artistic spirit of Fayoum and the individuality of the artisans who create it.
- Discover the broader allure of Fayoum through its lakes, desert scenery, historical sites and cultural traditions, all of which bring added depth and context to the festival experience.
- Through its close association with the renowned Evelyne Porret Pottery School, the festival offers opportunities to observe master craftsmanship and, in some cases, take part in hands-on workshops that reveal the patience, skill and joy behind the art of pottery.
How the Tunis Pottery and Handicrafts Festival Began
The story of Tunis Village as a centre of ceramic artistry begins with Evelyne Porret, the Swiss ceramist whose vision helped reveal the creative potential of this quiet Fayoum community. Drawn to the natural beauty of the village and inspired by the instinctive talent she saw in local children shaping figures from the mud, she began teaching pottery in a way that was both practical and transformative. What followed was not simply the introduction of a craft, but the nurturing of a creative identity that would come to define the village itself.
When Evelyne Porret founded the Fayoum Pottery School in 1989, it began as a modest workshop with an ambitious purpose: to equip local young people with artistic skills that could shape their futures. Over the years, that vision has had a profound effect, creating livelihoods, strengthening community pride and giving Tunis Village an international reputation for exceptional ceramic craftsmanship. Today, the festival honours that legacy in the most meaningful way possible—by allowing travellers to engage directly with a living tradition and with the people who continue to sustain it.

Fayoum Oasis
Physically, the Oasis corresponds to a depression dug in the limestone rock with a surface area of about 17.000 km², whose bottom lies 45 m below sea level and the surrounding relief rises 350 metres above sea level. To the north, a lake called Lake Qaran, spreads over 40 km in length and is 4 km wide at some points, thus covering about 200 km². That is all that is left of the “inland sea” which, during the upper Pharaonic period, still inundated most of the Fayoum lands so that the latter was known as the “Country of the Lake”.
