Day 2: The Mosque of Ibn Tulun and the Mosque of Muhammad Ali

Completed in 879, the Mosque of Ibn Tulun is one of Egypt and Africa’s oldest mosques, still standing in its original form and offering a rare glimpse into early Islamic Cairo.

Its vast courtyard, calm arcades, and distinctive spiral minaret create one of Cairo’s most atmospheric sacred spaces. Built around a spacious open courtyard, the mosque invites you to slow down, look closely, and appreciate the balance of simplicity, scale, and craftsmanship. Look for elegant carved stucco and wood decoration that reveals the mosque’s refined early Islamic craftsmanship.

Commissioned by Ahmad ibn Tulun, the mosque reflects the ambition and artistry of one of Cairo’s most important early Islamic periods. Its warm red brick and carved stucco give the building a distinctive, beautifully unified character.

Set on the Hill of Thanksgiving, the mosque also carries local legends that add colour and atmosphere to the visit.

The Mosque of Muhammad Ali

The Mosque of Muhammad Ali is one of Cairo’s most recognisable landmarks, rising from the Citadel with commanding views over the city and a skyline presence travellers never forget.

Al-Rifa’i Mosque and Masjid Misr, New Cairo

Beside the Cairo Citadel, Al-Rifa’i Mosque combines spiritual significance, royal history, and grand Neo-Mamluk design in one of the city’s most impressive sacred settings.

Built between 1869 and 1912, Al-Rifa’i Mosque is closely linked to Egypt’s royal past and the legacy of the Muhammad Ali dynasty.

Its Neo-Mamluk style blends rich Islamic decorative traditions with the confident scale of late 19th-century Cairo.

Expect elegant stonework, impressive proportions, and a sense of grandeur that makes this one of the city’s most striking religious monuments.

The vast complex includes a large prayer hall and royal mausoleum, giving the visit both architectural impact and historical depth.

The Royal Mausoleum is where members of the royal family such as King Farouk are laid to rest as well as the Shah of Iran who died in Egypt after his exile from Iran.

Lunch: Enjoy lunch at a local restaurant en route to the Grand Mosque.

The Grand Mosque — Masjid Misr, New Cairo

Masjid Misr impresses from the moment you arrive, with vast scale, refined detail, and striking views beneath its 32-metre dome.

Inside, specially commissioned Egyptian artwork, intricate wood ceilings, and refined detailing create a contemporary showcase of Islamic design.

A spectacular chandelier beneath the dome forms a luminous focal point and adds to the mosque’s sense of occasion.

From its elevated platform, Masjid Misr also offers impressive views across the new capital and governmental district.

Day 4: Departure and/or Optional Bazaar Experience

Breakfast at the hotel, followed by checkout.

Checkout times can be discussed with the hotel and are typically between 11:00 am and noon.

Depending on your departure time and onward travel arrangements, you may choose to relax at the hotel or enjoy one final Cairo experience.
