A Dahabiya is a traditional two-masted sailing boat. In Arabic, it is translated as ‘a golden one’. These vessels were common in Egypt in the early part of the 19th century up until the 1870’s and were used for travelling by the populace and also by the Egyptian monarchy and elites for their socialising. In those days, they were considered to be the first class method for touring. Today they still represent a great way to get around, albeit at a leisurely pace, and the way to see the real Egypt.
