A Chance to Meet the Gems of Egypt – Its People

Meeting the local farmers and people of Egypt is the most moving and inspiring thing you can do on a journey to Egypt.  Whilst you will be able to have a glimpse into ancient Egypt by visiting the major historical sites, it is meeting the local farmers and people of Egypt which will be your touchstone in understanding the DNA of Egyptians.  For their embrace of life, for their faith, creativeness and resilience.  One Horizon’s experience, Meeting the Locals, is an inspiring journey to the Nile Delta where farmers have, for centuries, embraced the land and farming.  And it will be like meeting old friends whose friendship and warmth will invade you.  It’s an opportunity to interact with people from a completely different way of life to yourself and yet whose insight into life will touch you.

The villages in and around Cairo and in the Nile Delta is where this will happen.  By spending time with the people of Egypt you will be transformed.  We invite you to join us.  As with so many of our guests, you will be swept up in an emotional journey that will change you forever.  And the chance to share the lessons of your own life and to understand what we all have in common.   So come on a most incredible journey with One Horizon.   It will be a day you will never forget.

A Few Facts About Egypt’s Land

Approximately 10% of Egypt’s land is inhabited, while the vast majority, about 90%, is desert. This means roughly 105,199 square kilometres are habitable. Due to the limited habitable land, population density is very high along the Nile River and in the Nile Delta. Only a small percentage of the total land area is suitable for agriculture, with estimates ranging from 3% to 5%. The Nile Delta in particular has been farmed for thousands of years.  A large portion (57%) of people live in rural areas, including those in agricultural regions.

Egypt’s New River Project

Egypt’s New River project, specifically the New Delta project, is designed to create a new agricultural area using an artificial river, which will be habitable by providing water for irrigation and other needs. This project includes the construction of a 114 km artificial river and extensive land reclamation efforts. The project aims to cultivate 2.2 million acres of agricultural land and reduce reliance on imported food.

The New River project is not just about creating a waterway but about developing a new habitable area in Egypt’s desert regions, supporting agriculture, and contributing to the country’s economy and food security.
